The end of the year is an ideal time to reflect on the growth and progress you’ve made and be grateful for what you have. At Vista Taos, we’ve gone through a lot of changes this year, and we’re proud to share them with you in this post.
Our 2022 Accomplishments
As a private residential treatment facility located in the healing haven of Taos, New Mexico, we’ve worked with clients who want to transform their lives since 1994. Our holistic approach allows you to connect with your authentic self, giving you the best opportunity to recover from the disease of addiction.
This year, we served 146 clients and expanded our dedicated staff of certified and licensed professionals, with a new medical director, nurse, two part-time physician assistants, a chef and recovery advocates joining our team. We also upgraded our kitchen and got a new van that we’ve already put to good use taking our clients on various activities and excursions throughout Taos.
In 2023, we are adding psychodrama to our list of addiction treatment programs. We give our clients the best chance of lifelong recovery with individualized health plans in an intimate, judgment-free setting.
Mental Health and Substance Abuse Issues in New Mexico
To provide a snapshot of mental health status among youth and adults in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., Mental Health America published its 2023 State of Mental Health Report earlier this year. Among other things, this national survey aims to determine how many adults and young people need and can access mental and behavioral health services. While the report does not provide a complete picture of the American mental health system, it is a starting point for assessing the prevalence of mental health concerns nationwide.
When creating the report, MHA identified 15 measures of mental illness and access to care for adults and children, then combined scores to make up the overall ranking. A higher ranking indicates less widespread mental illness, combined with easier access to care. At 22, New Mexico’s score is closest to the average.
Additionally, according to the New Mexico Department of Health, all 10 of the state’s leading causes of death relate to alcohol, tobacco or other drugs. Over the past 30 years, New Mexico has consistently had among the highest alcohol-related death rates in the U.S., and the state has had the highest alcohol-related death rate since 1997 – particularly in the Hispanic and Indigenous communities.
