Boxing Champion Enters Himself into Drug Rehabilitation Facility

Famous boxing champion Oscar De La Hoya has checked himself into a drug rehab clinic in May, 2011 to get the treatment he needs for substance abuse. Although the rehab facility and the substance he is abusing is being kept confidential, he did offer this statement to the public:

After doing an honest evaluation of myself, I recognize that there are certain issues that I need to work on. Like everyone, I have my flaws, and I do not want to be one of those people that is afraid to admit and address those flaws. Throughout my career and my life, I have always met all challenges head-on, and this is no different. I am confident that with the support of my family and friends, I will become a stronger, healthier person. I ask for respect and privacy as my family and I go through this process.

De La Hoya announced his retirement in 2009 and has not had a fight since his loss the previous year to Manny Pacquiao. There have been no known substance abuse problems affiliated with him in the past. However, having someone willingly enter drug rehab is a great breakthrough and shows a better sense of determination in the patient than you would see if they were forced to enter drug rehab. Wanting to get sober is the best attitude to have when entering addiction treatment

Hopefully, De La Hoya will take his positive attitude and desire to get better with him through his treatment stay at drug rehab. Though retired, he has recently been visiting big cities like Austin, Texas with his marketing company Golden Boy Promotions scouting the big cities of Texas and California for talent.
